Yes, there is plenty for kids to do and see on this island! Some options include swimming, snorkeling, fishing, surfing, kayaking, tennis, renting sailboats, boat excursions, island tours, exploring caves and cliffs, cliff-jumping at the ocean hole, visiting the glass window bridge, and taking a dune buggy ride to Lighthouse Beach.

Eleuthera is very rural and 110 miles long. Taxis are the only public transportation, but they are fairly expensive. If you want to explore, visit other beaches, or try different restaurants, renting a car is recommended. Rental cars cost about $80 per day, with Jeeps, SUVs, and minivans costing a bit more. There are two ATMs in Governors Harbour, so getting cash is easy. Most higher-end restaurants, gift shops, liquor stores, and some grocery stores accept credit cards. Many local businesses do not, so having some cash is advisable.

Power outages can happen once or twice during a week-long stay. They are usually brief, lasting from 5 minutes to an hour. Power almost always comes back quickly, so there is no need to worry or take any action.

There are two supermarkets: Birchies in Bluff near North Eleuthera Airport, and The Marketin Rock Sound, which offers delivery and online ordering. Smaller grocery stores andseveral organic farms with farm stands are scattered around the island. Prices are generally50% to 100% higher than in the U.S. Some visitors bring frozen meat and other costly items(legal except for fresh fruits and vegetables) to save money. Liquor and wine are plentiful and only slightly more expensive than in the U.S. Beer is available but expensive.

During the day, mosquitoes and no-see-ums are usually not a problem. They may appear at dusk and in the evening. No-see-ums are more common than mosquitoes. Wearing long pants and socks is the best prevention since they target legs and ankles. Evenings are usually comfortable, so this is manageable. The bite is not very bothersome but should not be ignored. At the first bite, put on long pants and socks, especially if you are allergic, to avoid itchy bumps the next day. Another effective prevention is generous application of baby oil, which prevents bites.

There is an excellent new clinic called Eleuthera Medical Center in Palmetto Point, plus a private doctor (see Medical Care above). For serious injuries or illnesses, patients are medevaced to Florida by airplane.

Eleuthera is known for being safe. With a population of about 8,000, most people know each other. Locals and regular visitors often pick up hitchhikers. Petty theft occurs occasionally, so use common sense. Lock your house when you go out or at night. Don’t leave cash unattended on the beach or elsewhere. If you park in a remote spot, leave the car unlocked with the windows down.

It is highly recommended to purchase travel insurance to protect yourself from cancellation fees and medical expenses. Municipally treated water is safe, but most visitors prefer bottled water. Many houses are not on the municipal system and may not have drinkable water.

In Governors Harbour and for miles north and south, a large barrier reef reduces surf on the Atlantic side. North of James Cistern, the reef ends, and the northern half of Eleuthera has world-famous surfing beaches with big waves.

This is less true than it was 10 years ago. About half the restaurants close for 4 to 8 weeks during the slow fall season. However, many, including 1648, La Bougainvillea, Pascal’s, Leo Rose, and The Cove, stay open year-round (call to confirm). Stores and most other businesses remain open all year.
